The Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple in Wan Chai was the first gurudwara (Sikh Temple) in Hong Kong. It was built in 1901 by Sikh members of the British Army, and it was rebuilt in 1938 owing to an increase in the number of Sikhs in Hong Kong.
From the Sikh perspective, providing services for their family and beliefs, and for all people is a central part of their system of beliefs. Therefore, different kinds of voluntary services have always been provided in the gurudwara, for both Sikhs and non-Sikhs. Inside the temple are a library, kindergarten, social hall and other facilities. In the Guru’s Langar (kitchen and eating house), free meals are offered to visitors, irrespective of race, religion or nationality. The aim is to remove the distinction people and construct the consciousness of equality.
