Abstract

The physical and chemical properties of the lunar surface suggest that the Moon is a dying astronomical object. During the 1960-1970s, great achievements in lunar exploration had been made. The background of Apollo lunar manned program will be introduced, and the doubts about the program will be explained. Nowadays, the major space countries are beginning a new era in lunar exploration. The reasons for the utilizations of the Moon, e.g. mining the resources, power generation, and the values of the environment will be discussed. China has planned the complete lunar exploration strategy. The story and scientific achievements of CE-1 and CE-2 lunar orbiter missions, and CE-3 lunar lander and rover mission will be presented. In the next three years, CE-4 will firstly soft landed on the farside of the Moon in the human history. CE-5 will return lunar samples to the Earth in 2017. As well as the Moon, China will prepare to explore the Mars, asteroids, Jupiter system and other solar system object in the next two decades.
