Video processing plays a critical role in smart city video surveillance systems. Video surveillance systems have been installed in many cities in China, however they are faced with the challenges of “difficult to store large volume of data, hard to find the targeted data and poor quality of images”. New generation of intelligent video surveillance systems is proposed to solve the problems. In particular, efficient video coding algorithms are designed to store large volume of video data; real-time feature extraction and cross-stream search techniques are proposed to facilitate the search of images; resolution improvement and image compensation technologies are developed to improve image qualities. With IEEE1857 as a standard of reference, this seminar will present possible solutions of the challenging issues and discuss the perspectives of the future development in the field.
Professor Gao Wen is Professor in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at Peking University and Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Before joining Peking University in 2006, he was Professor in the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1996-2005) and Professor in Harbin Institute of Technology (1991-1995). Professor Gao received his PhD in Electronic Engineering from University of Tokyo in 1991.
Professor Gao works in the areas of multimedia and computer vision, including video coding, video analysis, multimedia retrieval, face recognition, and multimodal interfaces. He published five books and over 700 technical articles in refereed journals and proceedings in above areas. He earned many awards including six National Awards in Science and Technology Achievements. He has been featured by IEEE Spectrum in June 2005 as one of the "Ten To Watch" among China's leading technologists. He is a fellow of IEEE, a fellow of ACM, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
