Decision Making and Operations Research Techniques for Construction Management challenges the traditional empirical approach to problem solving and provides construction practitioners with a seasoned account to resolving day-to-day complicated issues in construction project management.

With over 150,000 workers at different levels working at dispersed project sites throughout the territory, construction managers have to look for optimal solutions to minimize the costs and to maximize the efficiencies. This book provides scientific tools for practitioners to resolve some practical problems which are administered empirically at present and may lead to inconsistent results and human errors. The modern decision-making tools introduced in this book include Multi-criteria Decision-making Models, Artificial Neural Network, Genetic Algorithms, Construction Simulation, Rough Set Theory and Advanced Statistical Techniques for construction.

This book will serve as a useful companion for those managing construction projects that are becoming more and more quantitative in nature, and will provide an invaluable source of reference for both undergraduate and advanced postgraduate students.

The construction industry is one of the largest industries in Hong Kong, employing over 150,000 people at dispersed project sites throughout the territory. Alike other industries, the construction industry is facing the increasingly competitive and quality-discerning market, indicating a compelling need to upgrade the quality of the services and products. The traditional empirical approach to problem solving is being challenged. Nowadays, a practically acceptable solution is insufficient as people are chasing for optimal solutions to minimize costs and maximize efficiencies. As a result, construction managers need to be equipped with modern decision making tools in resolving the day-to-day increasingly complicated problems.

To address the inadequacies of similar publications on decision-making techniques for construction, this book is intended to serve as both a reference and text book for undergraduate and graduate students in construction. Further, this book is illustrated with practical examples that facilitate practitioners and readers in understanding these quantitative tools for applying them to solve real-life practical problems.

The modern decision-making techniques contained in this book include Multi-criteria Decision-making Models that embrace Analytic Hierarchy Process, Non-structural Fuzzy Decision Support System, ELECTRE III and SIR Methods; Artificial Neural Networks that consist of different architectures such as Back propagation network, General Regression Neural Network, Probabilistic Neural Network and Group Method of Data Handling; Genetic Algorithms; Construction Simulation; Rough Set Theory; and Advanced Statistical Techniques.

This book also provides some good materials for research students in understanding the research methodology which has become more and more quantitative in nature in the recent years. We hope readers will find this book useful.
