Exhibition & Opening Ceremony: Post-War Hong Kong & the Story of Tat Chee Avenue
On 18 October 2021, City University of Hong Kong Press and Run Run Shaw Library, City University of Hong Kong, jointly held the opening ceremony for the “Post-War Hong Kong & the Story of Tat Chee Avenue” Exhibition. This exhibition presents an overview of the housing, education, and industry conditions in the 1950s and 1960s using historically valuable images, publications, and maps. It also introduces the history of Tat Chee Avenue and Yau Yat Chuen, as well as the specific contributions of U Tat Chee to their development. The exhibition is mainly based on our recent publication U Tat Chee: The Ginger King in Post-War Hong Kong.
In addition to the granddaughter of U Tat Chee Ms Grace YU, the event was attended by various leaders from different social sectors. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Lester Garson HUANG (Council Chairman of City University of Hong Kong), Prof Way KUO (President and University Distinguished Professor of City University of Hong Kong), Mr Paul WONG (District Officer (Sham Shui Po) of Home Affairs Department), Dr Sunny CHAI (Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries), and Dr LO Kam Wing (Executive Vice President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong). Many of those in attendance at the event are acquainted with Mr U Tat Chee, the subject of the book, and his contribution to Hong Kong industry and commerce, education, and the development of Yau Yat Tsuen in Kowloon Tong.
During the event, Ms YU explained the content of the exhibition and the reasons for holding it. She also shared her precious memories with Mr U Tat Chee, further exemplifying his profound influence on those closest to him.
The exhibition will be held from 18 to 31 October at Wofoo Foundation Gallery, Run Run Shaw Library, 3/F Yeung Kin Man Building, City University of Hong Kong.
