Building AI Knowledge and Skills for Curriculum Development
Do you want to increase your knowledge and sharpen your skills for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into your university courses?
The Talent and Education Development Office (TED) can help you through its academic staff development programme entitled “Building AI Knowledge and Skills for Curriculum Development.” By building up your knowledge and skills through this programme, you will be better able to integrate AI into your courses and be better prepared to take on larger, funded AI projects in education in the future.
- What are the important dates for the programme?
Registration opens on July 4, 2023.
The programme launches on July 17, 2023.
The programme concludes in January, 2024.
- Who may register?
All full-time CityU academic staff may register for Stage One and, upon successful completion, proceed to Stage Two. In addition, for Stage Two participants an expedited Teaching Development Grant (TDG) approval system will review micro-proposals you may wish to submit for integrating AI into your Semester A CityU course. The system aims to facilitate timely approval of satisfactory TDG micro-proposals prior to the commencement of Semester A.
Full-time academic staff nominated by the other UGC-funded universities may register for Stage One. Contact your university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning for details on nomination.
- What are the Intended Learning Outcomes for each stage of the programme?
By the completion of all four components of Stage One, participants will be able to:
- Describe four basic approaches to conceptualizing AI;
- Discuss examples of each of the four approaches and other relevant issues as they pertain to education;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of several learning models for integrating AI into university courses;
- Formulate an Action Research plan for integrating AI into a university course.
By the completion of all three components of Stage Two, participants will be able to:- Plan an Action Research project for integrating AI into one of their university courses;
- Execute the Action Research project during Semester A, 2023-24;
- Reflect on the outcomes of the Action Research project through participation in an Online Exhibition of AI in Education after Semester A.
- What content is included in the two stages of the programme?
Stage One has four components, or sequential steps:
- Completion of the concise, video-based, on-line module AI in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment I, which discusses two basic approaches to conceptualizing AI, gives examples of such approaches in education, and discusses other pertinent issues. The module includes pre- and post-quizzes (with a post-quiz score of at least 70% to proceed to the next component) and should be completed by August 4, 2023;
- Completion of the concise, video-based, on-line module AI in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment II, which discusses two other basic approaches to conceptualizing AI, gives examples of such approaches in education, and discusses other pertinent issues. The module includes pre- and post-quizzes (with a post-quiz score of at least 70% to proceed to the next component) and should be completed by August 4, 2023;
- Participation in the on-campus, face-to-face seminar Effective Models of Learning for AI Products, which makes explicit several credible learning theories and how they relate to AI in teaching and learning. The on-hands seminar will be held on the CityU campus on August 9, 2023;
- Participation in the on-campus, face-to-face seminar Action Research Using AI Products, which raises awareness about action research and how it enables the teacher to organize and understand about making an intervention in his/her teaching in order to improve teaching practice. The on-hands seminar provides a framework for understanding the innovating process and empowers the teacher to get better control over what they are doing and see the results. The seminar will be held on the CityU campus on August 9, 2023.
Completion of the second seminar also requires the submission of a satisfactory one-page description [~350-450 words] of a potential action research project for integrating AI into a particular course. The submission is due no later than August 18, 2023.Besides the personal particulars, the submission should be organized into three sections with a heading for each:
- Description: Describe how the AR project would be carried out in that course [~150 – 200 words];
- Model of Learning: Describe which model of learning would be used and the rationale for using it [~150 – 200 words];
- Conclusion: Make a conclusion in ~50 words or less.
Successful completion of all the components in Stage One will earn registered participants a Certificate of Completion in AI in Education, awarded by the Talent and Education Development Office (TED) of CityU.Full-time CityU academic staff may register for Stage Two upon completion of Stage One.
Stage Two has three components, or sequential steps, and is available for CityU academic staff who complete Stage One.
- Development of a plan for an Artificial Intelligence Action Research project for integrating AI (“The AIAR Plan”) into one of their CityU courses in Semester A, 2023-24. The AIAR Plan should include the action research project written assignment which was submitted for the second seminar in Stage One (see above), with additional well-developed sections in the body of the plan for the Schedule and Budget, and is due no later than August 18, 2023. In addition, CityU academic staff who proceed to this component may also apply for expedited approval of a Teaching Development Grant for an AI Action Research Project of 80K – 100K HKD. To do so, The AIAR Plan should also be submitted to the Chair of the TDG Committee via TED no later than August 18, 2023. Successful applications will be announced by August 25, 2023;
- Implementation of The AIAR Plan for integrating AI into one of their CityU courses in Semester A, 2023-24;
- Participation in sharing The AIAR Plan through participation in an Online Exhibition of AI in Education after Semester A. Participation should include a reflection which briefly describes The AIAR Plan, discuss its implementation and the results, and consider modifications for future iterations. The format for the exhibition will be 2-4 PowerPoint slides and should be submitted by January 10, 2024.
Successful completion of all the components in Stage Two will earn registered participants a Certificate of Completion with Honours in AI in Education, awarded by the Talent and Education Development Office (TED) of CityU.
