Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8) and
Jockey Club House Active Resident Award
Miss Yuan ZHAO, Yolanda
First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for receiving the Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8) Active Resident Award. I am honoured to be selected as one of the recipients this year.
My name is ZHAO Yuan, a year two Ph.D. student from Electrical Engineering Department. I come from China mainland and I am very fortunate to be a member of hall 8. Living in Hall 8 for about 1 year, I have participated in many activities, such as basketball and table tennis competition, yoga class and board games. I have been a volunteer at the Welcome Party and Christmas Party, and I also have assisted other residence tutors in organizing activities. During this time, I have deeply attracted by the atmosphere of the residence life in our university, which also changed my mind that the dormitory is just a place to stay. I sincerely thank every tutor for their efforts and the support of the Hall Master and Student Residence Office.
Here, I want to share my favourite residential experience. I like table tennis very much and our hall organizes table tennis activities from time to time. In the table tennis event, I have guided others how to play and have been guided by others. I also participated in the PEK table tennis competition. I have met many new friends in these activities and applied the learned skills in real competitive situations. In addition, among group table tennis players is a friend who loves the guitar. I have been learning pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument, since college, and I have unusual love for stringed instruments. I and this friend often discuss and try to make scores and ensembles. Finally, we brought an ensemble of electric guitar and pipa at this year's Hall Welcome party. We are currently planning to try the ukulele and guitar ensemble, hoping to bring new performances at the Christmas party. I think the key to enjoying residential life is relax and active. There are a variety of activities in Hall, try to find the activities you are interested in, take the initiative to explore, and you will receive a return.
Receiving the Active Resident Award is definitely a huge motivation for me. It is a kind of recognition of my contribution to extracurricular activities organized by the hall and the SRO. Once again, thanks very much for providing me the opportunity to receive the Active Resident Award. I am looking forward to making a contribution to our hall in the coming year.
