Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award
Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8) and Jockey Club House (JCH)
Mr. LI Song
My name is Song LI and I’m a PhD student in department of mechanical engineering. And most importantly, I am a student in Hall 8.
I’m extremely honored to be awarded the Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award and it is gratifying to be a part of a ceremony of this type. Frankly speaking, this is my first time to deliver this kind of experience sharing so it’s a great responsibility and I cast my mind back to the previous two years trying to find any extraordinary things that may help me to get the award. However, there is nothing special. All what I have done are the same as you guys.
As you know, for a PhD student, you’re under constant pressure, facing challenges that you have to overcome over and over. Conducting experiments in the lab, attending weekly meetings, obtaining and analyzing data, preparing presentations, writing papers, writing the thesis and so forth. These can leave you feeling emotionally, mentally and physically drained. How to solve it? For me, I would like to round up my friends in the common room in hall and grabs some drinks with each other. I always feel relax and calm after that and this can make me full of energy and become more optimistic towards my study in the following days.
During the weekend or public holidays, sometimes my friends and I get together and cook. Cooking together is a great way to catch up with friends and explore new foods. Also, at the end of a tiring day, I can find relaxation in cooking because it serves as a form of expression and stress release. I remember once a time there was a new coming student in our lab, and we invited him to hall and made the hotpot. He is minority from western China and never tried the traditional hotpot in Hong Kong which I think for the taste is relatively light. We added fresh vegetables and raw meat and fumes started spreading out into the dining area. You could sense the anticipation from his face. He told us lots of stories about the local culture and his learning experience and that was really a wonderful night.
Furthermore, I like to explore the natural scenery in Hong Kong. I remembered I went to the Dragon’s back and the Sunset peak which I knew from Eason Chan’s album cover.
There are lots of interesting and meaningful things that I can share with you guys and talked about these for days, like the movie nights, the singing and sports competitions, the dog therapy which causes my curiosity at first and so on.
I believe CityU offers opportunities for students beyond the classroom and push students to reach their maximum potential through dozens of degree options. So if you ask me the key to get the award, maybe you just need to try your best at what you are really interested in and make it fun.
Once again, thank you all for this opportunity.
