Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6) Scholarships

Mr. LIM, Yan Qian

BBA in Accountancy, Year 3

What is the meaning of resident hall? As a non-local student, hall is our home, is a place for us to be ourselves. We stepped out of our confront zone, came here for a fresh new start without our beloved family and friends around us. The only thing we had was loneliness forming from the depths of our hearts. However, no man is an island; we met new friends and led a new lifestyle. Our new lives here revolved around the hall. We cooked together to save what little we had, joined hall activities together for hall return, shared our ups and downs; and little by little, helped each other break free from the chains of solitude. For me and all of us, it is an irreplaceable experience that fills up the pages of our memories.

Every time I recall my memories from the past year, I feel blessed that I had joined most of the hall activities as I had met so many interesting friends and had so much fun with them. Some of them even became long-lasting friends. Moreover, I had the pleasure to help organize some significant events for my hall, such as the Spring Festival and Hall 6 Night for my hall. We planned, discussed, worked hard and put a great amount of effort into those events. Especially for Hall 6 Night, as it was an important event for the new residents to get to know each other, the Hall 6’s resident master, tutors, and culture.

Furthermore, I am a sporty person and like to make friends. Therefore, through the sports team selection, I was one of the team managers for Hall 6 in charge of both football and basketball. I had organized plenty of screening sessions, training sessions, friendly matches, and others. By becoming the team manager, I had made friends with many residents and developed a closely knit and harmonious atmosphere between the players. Even though, we have lost the competition last year, I believe we can do better this year.

Besides that, one thing that I am particularly proud of is representing Hall 6 to perform in the PEKC singing contest with my resident friends. We trained, sang, and had fun every night. On the day of the competition, I was incredibly nervous, and had no idea why my teammates looked so chill. Hundreds of people were there watching me closely as we were about to sing on stage. I have never been this nervous before as that was the first time in my life where I had to sing in front of such a large crowd. “You can do this, just a few minutes then it is over!”, I whispered to myself before I sang. Then, the music started playing, we sang. I was singing with all my might as I poured out all my emotions into my singing. The audience roared and clapped right after we finished singing! I was so proud of myself and appreciated everyone’s support, especially my teammates. It will always be one of my most treasured memories.

Overall, I am glad that I am a resident of Hall 6. I appreciate everything and everyone in my life, there are no accidents in our intelligent universe, and everything that shows up in our life has something to teach us. Also, studying is one of the things we must do, but it is not the only thing we should do. University is the epitome of society, step out of your comfort zone, and grab the opportunities to develop yourself as a well-rounded person. Remember to always strive to have a work-life balance, just like the culture of Hall 6, “Work Hard Play Hard.”
