Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6) Scholarship
Mr. LAW Chun Kit
Hall life is a dream for every university student which is one of the ‘Five Things in University’. Student residence offers a short distance to lecture rooms and freedom to live independently, which are my primeval reasons to apply for it. But after what I experienced in the last year, it changed my mind.
I am glad that I could be a part of LSK hall and know everyone I met in hall over the last year. In the beginning, I was inexperienced as being the hall freshman even I was the year-3 students. Though various activities contributed by the hall 6 residence tutors and residence student’s association, such as the student-initiated events, high table dinner and poon choi, I was getting to know each other and further enhanced the knowing and bonding between me and the hallmates. We spent most of the time together, like eating, chatting and going to class together in the normal day. We celebrated everyone’s birthday, festivals and any other pleasure moments. We shared all those ups and downs like a family.
One year of hall life, I have developed my life skills and turned me into an independent person. Maintaining the daily commodities, tidying up the room and doing the laundry became one of those regular tasks when classes were ended. Sometimes, I cooked with my hallmates. We would talk and share our different encounters while eating. Also, living in hall turned me into an openminded person under the cultivated community with both the locals and international students. For example, when I hang out with hallmates who are from Muslim countries, I would avoid to pork-meal due to the cultural inhibition.
In any relationship, there has to be certain give-and-take. I was grateful to make those friends here and learn from them. Therefore, I was ambitious to contribute myself to my hall. Throughout the year, I initiated a dessert workshop with my friends, organized community service activities to hallmates, being the starter and backup in both inter-hall aquatic and athletic competition representing my hall, led my floormates as the floor representative to win the floor decoration competition. Sometimes, I might even serve as cockroach catcher in hall when someone scared of cockroach.
I witnessed the consolidated cheering from all the LSK hallmates at any interhall PEK contests. There were cheers for all the highs and lows and the ultimate celebrations once our team win the game. I was lucky enough to be one of the swimmers representing my hall in the inter-hall aquatic competition. During the competition, I could hear the enthusiastic cheering and my name shouting out from my hallmates which gave me power to do my best in the game. All these moments give me the notion of being the ‘Hall 6 family’ and we are unit as one. In hall 6, We learned about and from each other. The hall life I experienced become my important path of growth with precious and priceless memories.
