Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award
Jockey Club Academy Hall (Hall 4)
Miss SHEN Yu, Cindy
It is my great honor to receive Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award this year. This is my fourth year to live Hall 4, and I am very grateful for having a fruitful hall life. As a sports lover, I really enjoy various PEK competitions in every academic year. A series of events provide many opportunities to meet different people and enjoy the teamwork with hallmates. It is also a great honor to fight for our hall. In the past three years, I joined the women basketball team each year and trained with my teammates. Although our team consisted of people with different backgrounds, including local and international students, we cooperated very well on the court and learned a lot from each other. I felt so excited when our hall won 1st Runner-up in 2018/19, as our efforts paid off and brought glory to our hall. In my second year, I participated the badminton competition as a member of hall team. We entered the finals after several heated matches and won 1st Runner-up at the end. When the cheering team shouted out our hall slogan together, there was a strong sense of belonging and pride. It was really exciting when our team got the prize and medals. We hugged and thanked each other, as we had a great time playing badminton together and kept improving ourselves. I participated in the table tennis competition as well. With the help of a university team player, I received professional training and learned useful skills for the competition. Our effective teamwork finally helped us to get 3rd Runner-up. The third year is really unforgettable to me because our hall team made great achievements in most events. As a player in women 4X100 relay, I collaborated well with my teammates, and we won 1st Runner-up in the 25th Annual Athletic Meet. I felt so moved and powerful when hearing the cheering from the stands. In addition to being a player, I also chose to be a manager for swimming and soccer team. It was a good chance to improve my communication and problem-solving skills. I could feel that our team spirit was increasing progressively, and it contributed to our final achievement. It is amazing that when all of us aim at the same goal of winning champion for our hall, we get closer quickly and can develop long-lasting friendship. During the celebration parties with hall master, we had delicious meals, chatted, shared our feelings and played games like a big family.
Enjoyed food and game in Hall Master’s home.

I have also participated in various hall activities, such as Global Tea Reception, Academians’ Night, High Table Dinner and Integration Trip. These were full of fun and helped me to meet new friends. I felt more connected with my hallmates through these well-designed events. When I volunteered to be a helper or a team leader in some activities, I would prepare well before each activity to ensure that the residents’ experience would be enjoyable. I was able to effectively coordinate the team and communicate well with PIC and participants, which helped the activity to go smoothly. As a result, my leadership and communication skills are enhanced. It is inspiring that I can keep learning new things while having fun. All of the hall activities were unforgettable and gave me the chance to build up good relationships with fellow residents. It could be very relaxing to stay with hallmates and enjoy the interesting event. Besides, as a floor representative last year, I assisted our residence tutor in the floor management. For example, I would check the supplies in common room regularly and make replacement in time. I also helped to organize floor activities which were designed to get everyone involved. We worked on floor decoration, made different dessert and went out for dinner. It was interesting to know more about different culture from my floormates. We have broadened our horizon when exchanging ideas with people from different background. With past residence experience, I also tried to respond to fellow residents’ needs as soon as possible and provide support whenever they need help.
In addition, I enjoy many activities organized by Student Residence Office each year. The celebration of some traditional festivals such as Middle Autumn Festival gives us a warm feeling of home. MAC night is also very meaningful because it provides us with a great opportunity to communicate with SRO directly and raise our concerns. The open discussion helps to make our residence life better. Various workshops such as Yoga and Ukulele give us a chance to develop our hobbies. The hall life is really helpful in our all-round development.
I am grateful that I have received a lot of help from different people throughout my hall life. An important thing to have a fruitful hall life is to keep an open mind and embrace various new things. When participating in different kinds of activities, residents can discover their unlimited potential and develop beneficial relationships with other hallmates. Residents can gain a sense of belonging and develop great team spirits by joining a wide range of activities.
