Studying in a new country can be a pretty intimidating experience, you’re far away from everything familiar to you and alone with no one you know in the residence halls. For me, I did not realise how important my family and friends back home were as my support system. However, trust me that it definitely gets better and much more enjoyable! For one, a big part of what made my residence life such a good experience was being able to make friends that now feel like a family to me. The benefit of us living in residence halls together made organizing hotpot dinners so much more convenient!

There were also many activities organized by the Residence Association and Residents Tutors in our hall like the Hall 11 Welcoming Party, International Orientation, Sky Night, Halloween Haunted House and Christmas Party. I would really recommend new residents to join these activities as it is a good chance to make new friends.

Besides activities organized by the Residence Association and the Residence Tutors, there were also various other activities hosted by the residents that I joined like Chinese fan painting, museums tours, Sudoku tutorials, making lipsticks and traditional rabbit figurines. I also organized a Malaysian dessert workshop with my friends where I taught my hallmates how to make a traditional Malaysian dessert. The event turned out better than I expected and it was a good opportunity for the participants from different backgrounds to mingle and chat. I also co-organized a Thai language workshop with my friend from Thailand whereby I got the chance to learn more about her language and culture as well.
Also, my friends and I performed for the inter-hall Jam Night whereby we sang a few songs for the residents from various halls. It was the first time my friends and I had ever performed in front of so many people and we were so nervous, but looking back it was a pretty fun experience it gave me a chance to try something new and many of the other groups who performed were my friends so it was not too awkward.

Overall, I am very thankful that I got the chance to live in the residence halls throughout my studies here in CityU. I appreciate and am grateful for all the encounters, friends and memories that I have made here. I am sure that everyone who gets the chance to stay in the residence halls will have a good time. Just stay positive about new experiences and put yourself out there!
