Must-do list in University? Living in Student Residence for Sure!

It is my honor to be one of the recipients of the Hall Scholarship this year. First of all, I would like to thank our honorable Residence master Dr Chris as well as the SRO for considering me as the best student and offer me the scholarship.

Living in Hall 11 is no doubt the most memorable part of my year-1 university life. Not only does Hall 11 provide a comfortable living place for me to reside, but also enrich my university life and greatly expand my social circle via an array of activities.

Eleven Day, the biggest festival in Hall 11, residents gather together at the Sky Garden and have a party night.

Buddy Scheme

Buddy Scheme is the highlight of the university life which is the most unforgettable event. In this scheme, the local students will be the host and they bring the buddy who is the non-local student to travel around Hong Kong. As a host, I brought my buddy who is the Taiwanese full-time student to go to various spots in Hong Kong. We ate the local street food buying from the hawker and also ate local afternoon tea (下午茶) at the cha chann teng. And my host said that the Western-style fried rice is so palatable and she loves it so much. After that, we went to the Instagram Pier in Hong Kong which is a well-known place for taking picture among the young people in Hong Kong in these few years. Besides, we sometimes eat dinner together.

Through this scheme, I can learn how to get along with the foreign people and closely communicate which I never tried this before. Apart from helping the non-local student to more easily accommodate, the Buddy Scheme could benefit the local student by letting them to communicate with the foreigners and culturally exchange.

I suggest that more activities which can bridge the local and non-local students can be held in the future. As I have studies 1 year in City U, I found out that there are just nearly none activities like the Buddy Scheme. Also, the activities such as the Hall Orientation Camp are always separated into two categories: local and non-local, which inhibits the cultural exchange. So, for the purpose of bridging the gap between local and non-local student, more activities promoting cultural exchange can be held.

I joined the PEK Basketball competition last year. Surprisingly, I was selected as the captain of the team. The PEK cup is also worthy to join as it can strengthen the sense of belonging towards the hall by representing the hall to compete. I have also joined the orientation camp which is held under the No.10 typhoon. This is a crucial event as this provides the largest opportunity for the new residents to make new friends.

The exam and the deadline of the projects and papers is approaching. The Pizza Party is held during Week 12, thus enabling the residents to save time in travelling around to dine outside and can spend more time on their own work. Needless to say, our residence tutors are caring and thoughtful! In the Hall 11 Christmas Ball, the residents celebrate the Christmas festival together.

Work Hard, Play Hard

‘How can a student get a decent academic grade if he plays a lot?’ It is always a striking and popular question. Undeniably, it is difficult to strike a balance between playing and studying, especially in University. University is a place full of temptation and fun. You will have increasingly more friends and social circle after entering the University. Subsequently, you will spend a lot more time on gathering and meeting with friends. Also, living in the residence, it is easier for other students to ask you to play. Knocking your door, then, you have to play Mahjong with them at the common room.

Everyone has only 24 hours a day. So, tips of getting a decent grade and maintaining the social circle is the time management. Go play if you have finished your work or have sufficient time to complete it before deadline. Decline to play if you are not able to meet the deadline. Being determined is of the utmost importance.
