Miss HUANG Teng, Teresa

BSocSc in Public Policy and Politics, Year 3

HUANG Teng, Teresa

I am HUANG Teng, Teresa, a year 3 student major in Public Policy and this is the second year for me to live in Hall 11. Before moved in Hall 11, most of my friends were from mainland and we all communicated in mandarin, but now I found my spoken English have improved a lot thanks to frequent communication with our international fellows within hall activities. With high curiosity to learn others culture, I tried to approach our hallmates from different countries and regions to explore cultural differences and broader my horizon, as well as share our Chinese culture. I had held Student Initiated Events(SIE) for several times to facilitate the communication among our hallmates. The first one was DIY canvas bag as pressure reliever within final examination week to make residents exchange their strategies and plans in preparing for the final exams, relieve their stress from tight deadlines and energize them. This SIE was held very successfully in which the participants all made a good work for their canvas bag with creative ideas. During this process, we got to know more about each other and also the different majors and departments we study in.

The following two activities I held were aimed to celebrate our Chinese traditional festival and share Chinese culture. One was writing Spring Festival couplets to celebrate coming Spring Festival and make hallmates know more about Chinese calligraphy and customs. It was held just a few days before Spring Festival, and all participants could feel its importance and were immersed inside the happiness of coming Spring Festival.

The other was to make lantern to celebrate the Spring Lantern Festival and I hoped it could not only make participants know more about this festival but collect together to give best wishes for coming semester. Both these two events achieved their significance and facilitated the integration within us.

Before I entered university, I knew that experience hall culture is one of the most important components during the university’s life in Hong Kong. Therefore, I took part in various hall activities during this year and this experience made me explore my potential and possibilities. I would never know my strong interest and talents in Korean language learning if I didn’t take part in SIEs to meet with my Korean friend who has become one of my best friends now.

Hall activities made my wishes which included to learn to cook various snacks and play basketball to be achieved. Previously, I can never imagine that I can get up at 6 am in order to seize the opportunity with a German coach to practice 2-hour tennis for PEK competition on Saturday when I had 9-hour class for the whole day .

Through that experience, I could not only see the sunrise of Hong Kong for the first time but discovered my potential to fight hard for something thanks to this hall activity. In the tennis competition, I was very appreciate for the encouragement from my teammates and hallmates who helped me to overcome the nervous and won the game.

Since I can only work out my paper or essay in my personal space and relatively quiet environment, hall is always somewhere that I would like to stay to finish my work, and I really spent an enjoyable time in hall 11 where I had hot-pot with my friends, met my first Korean friend, cooked every breakfast and greeted with cleaners and guards every morning and night.
