Information of Hall Admission 2024/25 (Main Round)

The University offers Student Residence for full-time Research Degree Students in UGC-funded programmes. Application will be administered on a yearly basis. Due to the very limited residence places and increasing demand, the University is unable to offer residence places to UGC-funded research degree students for their entire study period. Furthermore, there is no guarantee at all that students will be granted residence places during their studies.

Students who are not successful in hall application are advised to visit "off-campus accommodation" for more information on searching off-campus accommodation.

Current Research Degree Students are accommodated in Jockey Club House (JCH) at Tat Chee Avenue, Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8) and 7-9th floor of Jockey Club Harmony Hall (Hall 7) on Cornwall Street at Kowloon Tong Compound.

Full-time research degree students* studying in UGC-funded programmes within normal study period

*Current students admitted in Academic Year 2023/24 and before.

There is no guarantee that students will be granted a residence place during their studies.

Current research degree students admitted in Academic Year 2023/24 and before:

Lot-drawing will be used for allocating hall places at Cornwall Street/ Jockey Club House located at Kowloon Tong Compound, priorities would be made available to support students with special conditions or needs, including:

  1. Students awarded with prestigious scholarships as endorsed by SGS;
  2. Students with special needs impairing their studies (subject to vigorous screening and documentary proofs)

If all applications of all eligible groups have been processed, available residence places will be offered to those students from full-time research degree students in non-UGC-funded programmes; full-time research degree students who have applied for extension of study (out-timers), full-time non-local postgraduate students and lastly research staff on an ad hoc basis. Offer of residence places will be on short-term basis. A surcharge of 25% will be levied on “out-time” students and students of non-UGC-funded programmes. An additional 35% will be levied for those who switch to i) part-time status while holding full-time employment with the university and; ii) research staff. All cases will be subject to room availability on a case by case basis.

Hall places are to be offered to successful applicants in a full residential year.**

** Important Notes:

  1. The period of stay will be decided by the Student Residence Office and will be subject to review in case of changes in student status, mode of study, normal study period and funding source of study programme and/or other circumstances.
  2. The period of stay for research degree students will normally be granted for a full residential year with the exact dates and duration announced by Student Residence Office. Students upon completion of their normal study period will be required to move out of the residence before the end date of normal study period.

Use of information

Information collected from applicants will be used for the admission exercise of Student Residence and will be kept as resident records for administrative purposes only.

Applicants will receive offer letters via email after the release of results, normally in early June. Successful applicants are solely responsible for offer acceptance by paying the confirmation fee within a specified period of time. Your hall offer will be forfeited and released to applicants on the waiting list if you do not accept the assigned hall and / or room type. Failure to complete the procedures by the deadline will result in cancellation of residential offer without further notification.

Flat-mate and Roommate Preference Indication

  1. After paying the confirmation fee, applicants can indicate their preferred flat-mates or roommates if they want to live in the same flat/suite.
  2. The success of matching flat-mates and roommates depends on the mutual indication, room availability and the number of applicants. Application may fail if no vacant rooms are available, and / or the applicants are not, mutually indicated.

  1. Room Type
    There are different room types available in Jockey Club House (JCH) at Tat Chee Avenue, Hall 8 and 7- 9th floor of Jockey Club Harmony Hall (Hall 7) on Cornwall Street. Hall 8 is a hall of co-ed floor. Room/suite will be assigned to residents of same gender. Please click Student Room to know more about the room layout.

  2. Unoccupied Bedspace / Rooms
    Accommodation are assigned on the principle of ensuring maximum design capacity. Any unoccupied bed(s)/room(s) shall be assigned to new residents(s) who may arrive throughout the residential period, and hence please keep the unoccupied bedspaces intact and get prepared for your roommate's check-in at any time during the whole residential period. No prior notice will be given. Illegal occupation will lead to disciplinary action with a penalty charges.

  3. General Principle for Room Assignment
    • Applicants will be invited to indicate their preferences of hall and room type when submitting the hall application.
    • Hall and room type will be assigned by lot-drawing. Residents are not allowed to change rooms unless request is made and duly approved by the Residence Master and Student Residence Office.
    • No room assignment will be made if successful applicants fail to complete application procedures properly or to confirm their hall offers.
    • After paying confirmation fee, applicant will be invited to indicate their preferred roommates/flat-mates of the same gender with mutual agreements.
    • Applicants' indications of preferred roommates/flat-mates will be considered as far as possible. There is no guarantee that students with hall offers will be assigned to a particular unit, room type, or with specific roommates/flat-mates. Final room assignments will be subject to room availability and hall admission policies. Student Residence Office or the Residence Master reserves the right to make alternative assignment decisions or re-assign students as appropriate.
    • Applicants who have not indicated their preferred roommates/flat-mates by the deadline will be randomly assigned by the computer system
    • Requests for room swapping / change will NOT be entertained before check-in and it will only be entertained between 3rd October and 30th April.

  4. Room Arrangement for married students
    Limited numbers of apartments will be made available to accommodate couples who are:
    • legally married;
    • either Full time Rpg students in UGC-funded programmes within normal study period, or Full time non-local taught postgraduate students in UGC-funded programmes
    • both get the hall offer of the same period and at the same compound.

    Applicants who wish to be considered for this arrangement are required to make a special request under "Additional Information" in the on-line application form. Proof on their marital status shall be submitted in time of application.

    The couples are required to sign an agreement to stay in the same apartment. In case any one of the students moving out due to change of student status or other reasons, the other couple will retain in the same room and another student of the same gender will be assigned to this apartment.
