SRO Signature Events

1. Wall Painting

Not unlike the power of language, various mediums of art can also help releasing stress. To liven the walls of the Student Residence, SRO hosted a wall-painting event in which residents colour the walls with designs based on the surrounding landmarks of Hong Kong and the new student hostel. In return for students leaving their legacy on the walls, the SRO also hopes to liven the curious and creative inner child within every resident with every stroke of their brush.

2. Residence Tutor Leadership Training Camp

Residence Tutors are important members of the residence hall community and the core of each Hall's management team. They are responsible in assisting the Residence Masters with crucial daily operations, and work to provide pastoral care to the residents of respective halls.
This year, with the new recruitment of members to be taking post soon, SRO managed to carry out the Residence Tutor Training Camp at HKAYP Jockey Club Duke of Edinburgh Training. Via various adventure activities, the tutors were able to learn what it takes to be a leader and how to manage and coordinate tasks with their teammates.
Meanwhile the tutors established understanding and confidence with one another through these daring and challenging activities. With great hopes and high spirits, they are sure to navigate through any obstacles as they work together to creative an optimal environment for their residence halls.

3. Glass-bottomed boat tour

The most amazing thing about nature is its infinite variety, especially the mystery of the ocean. The SRO will provide our student residents with the opportunity to experience the work of an oceanographer and explore the interrelationship between physical and biological parameters to gain a deeper understanding of how the changing marine environment affects sea life in a changing environment. They can enjoy activities such as coral observation on a glass-bottomed boat, plankton collection and observation, and measuring different physical parameters of the atmosphere and seawater by using scientific equipment. As plankton collection and scientific equipment, the hands-on learning opportunities provided by SRO, are very rare to find outside of SRO, and we consider this to be a great opportunity for our participants.

4. Mid-Autumn celebration

For this year's Mid-Autumn celebration, the SRO offered workshops for lantern-making and mooncake-making to encourage students to actively participate in this traditional culture.
Hoping to give students in residence a traditional experience of gathering around loved ones to give thanks for all that we have, the SRO shared the joy of what the Mid-Autumn Festival represents with free mooncakes and fruit giveaways to students, of which Professor Raymond Chan, our Vice President of Student Affairs, visited the residents of Hall 4 and 5 to distribute fruits and mooncakes as an act of sharing the love and appreciation around.
Students with COVID were not neglected as Professor Chan also hosted a Zoom meeting with students in isolation to check up on their recovery and to provide them with a care package with mooncakes, fruits, and vitamins for a speedy recovery.

5. Busking

To showcase the sheer amount of talent that resides within Student Residence, busking nights were held as a new initiative for residents to have a platform on stage and perform.

It was also an amazing cross-cultural learning experience as songs of various languages were performed to share the melodious tunes and unique music tones from different cultures.

6. CityU Inter- Hall League of Legends Solo Tournament 2022

The very first CityU Inter-Hall League of Legends Solo Tournament was launched in September. Each hall had their internal intra-hall competition, furthering their best players and gamers to be up for the inter-hall champion. The final contest was held in the Multimedia Theatre at Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre.

Honorable guests, Professor Raymond  Chan and Vice-President (Student Affairs), as well as all Residence Masters arrived on site, giving their most uplifting support for the gamers.

The competition was ablaze with tension and excitement, fiercely closing in on Hall 2 as the Champion, Hall 4 as Runner-up, and Hall 9 as Third Place.

7. Dolphins Encounter

It was a pleasure to have the Student Residence Organization provide opportunities for our student residents in both Semesters A and B, who are tired of the hustle and bustle of city life, to walk into nature and encounter dolphins. Students dressed in sportswear gather at Moon Chun Multi-function Hall and leave by coach together. In the morning, they can enjoy a dolphin survey, understand cetacean conversation in Hong Kong and meet dolphins on the yacht with the help of our guest speaker, Dr Brian Kot, Assistant Professor in JCC of the City University of Hong Kong, also the project leader of Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab and his team. A traditional Chinese-style lunch is usually served after the morning session, followed by a nearby temple tour or bleach cleaning together after lunch. Towards the end of the day, they would depart from the venue and return to the SR base.
