ABSTRACT: Redundancy plays an important role in many signal processing applications since it provides increased design flexibility and robustness against noise and other forms of data loss. We shall consider the problem of how to digitally represent redundant (overcomplete) signal expansions, and focus on a special class of algorithms known as sigma-delta quantizers. We shall discuss the basic ideas behind sigma-delta quantization and present some recent mathematical progress on: sigma-delta error bounds, stability theorems for sigma-delta algorithms, and noncanonical reconstruction procedures.
