Ciarlet and Prof. Roderick Wong Meshless Computation Methods for solving Partial Differential Equations by Date : October 26, 2005 (Wednesday) Abstract: This talk will report the recent rapid development in meshless methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). There are basically two types of meshless methods: strong-collocation-type and weak-formulation-type. Comparison between these two types of approaches and their connections between kernel methods for interpolation, approximation, learning theory, and solving PDEs will be discussed. Numerical results indicate the advantageous abilities of these methods in handling approximation of unstructured data and producing solutions of arbitrary smoothness and high accuracy to PDEs without the need of generating mesh. Recent applications of these methods to solve engineering problems include 3D tide and wave prediction, multiphasic flow in smart material with large deformation, micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) model, and most recently, various inverse problems such as boundary determination, source identification, and numerical differentiation from scattered data with noises. * Tea, coffee and cookies will be provided at the Faculty Common Room in B6501 before the colloquium from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please come and join us! ** All interested are welcome ** For enquiry: 2788-9816 ¡@
