Date: March 23, 2005 (Wednesday) Abstract: The scattering problems of electro-magnetic or light waves at waveguide discontinuities are important in practical engineering applications. A single waveguide discontinuity arises at a waveguide end facet or when two different waveguides are connected together. Multiple waveguide discontinuities can be found in many devices fabricated with piecewise uniform segments. For a single waveguide discontinuity, we describe efficient numerical methods based on Krylov subspace iterative methods and rational approximations of square root pseudo-differential operators. For multiple waveguide discontinuities, we present an iterative method that solves the wave fields at the discontinuities only, while the wave fields are efficiently propagated from one discontinuity to another in each iteration.
