Colloquium: Public Participation in Waste Management Systems

ABSTRACT

As waste management becomes a growing concern, how can we make better use of the resources we overlook? How can waste be managed in a way that minimizes its negative impact on both the environment and society? I’ll begin by introducing a Nagoya University project focused on utilizing untapped resources before diving into how Japan’s (and possibly Germany’s) municipal waste management system operates from the viewpoint of a resident. We’ll examine recycling percentages, the importance of proper waste disposal, and the role public participation plays in maintaining the system. This talk will offer insights into how societies are handling waste and why efficient disposal, powered by individual cooperation, is essential for a sustainable future—because when everyone chips in, the load gets a lot lighter.
