CityU Physics Students Competed in the Final in Milan as Hong Kong Representatives in PLANCKS 2023

PLANCKS, short for “Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kick-ass Students”, is a highly esteemed international team competition that focuses on theoretical physics, also known as the international final of the Physics Olympics. It attracts the best physics students from undergraduate and master's levels, often the winners of local competitions around the world, to compete in teams to solve problems in numerous disciplines of physics. Guest lectures, visits to laboratories and workshops are held during the event. This provides students with a valuable opportunity to make new personal and academic contacts and discover the frontiers of scientific research, as well as have fun during moments of socialisation.

A group of four undergraduate students from CityU Physics, Mr Xilai Xiao, Mr Wenxuan Xu, Miss Yumeng Xie and Miss Jinyi Fan, formed a team as “Spectrum of Life” and participated in the Hong Kong Preliminary of the PLANCKS competition between 25 - 26 March 2023. The team was selected as one of the two teams to represent Hong Kong in the final round of PLANCKS. The final round of PLANCKS 2023 was hosted by the Physics Department of the University of Milan and organised by the Italian Association of Physics Students on 12 - 16 May 2023, with 50 teams of competitors from various corners of the world.

The students were amazed and excited by the physics world they discovered in Milan. They not only took a challenging exam, but also attended enlightening lectures and workshops by renowned professors, and delved into the cutting-edge advancements in various fields. The students relished the opportunity to forge new friendships with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds and engage in enlightening discussions, which strengthened their own commitment to physics.

During their tight schedule in Milan, they snatched a moment of leisure. The students marvelled at the grandeur of Duomo – the Milan Cathedral during the event, immersing themselves in the city’s rich cultural heritage. Nonetheless, the orchestra concert organised by the organisers, coupled with the breathtaking views around the city, all composed a sense of wonder and appreciation for the experience. The fusion of humanities and arts in this vibrant city filled their hearts with warmth, further fueling their passion for knowledge.

PLANCKS was more than a competition for the students. It was a life-changing and rewarding adventure that connected them with the global physics community. They gained more than a score; they gained knowledge, experience, and feedback that would help them grow and improve. They also appreciated the beauty and hospitality of Milan, which blended humanities and arts in a lively way. The students returned with priceless memories, experiences, and a renewed sense of direction. PLANCKS had given them a chance to see the wonders of physics, build lasting bonds, and experience the rich culture of Milan. They look forward to applying what they learned to their future studies and lives.
