After a long wait and a lot of hard work, the face-to-face Commencement of the College of Science for Graduating Class of 2023 was held successfully on 11 May 2023. About 180 graduates attended the Commencement with joy and pride.

Presiding the ceremony, Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of CSCI, extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates in his opening address. Looking back on the pandemic period, when many classes were switched to online teaching, Professor Lee described the graduating class of 2023 as having undergone a very different and challenging university life. He reminded the graduates that they have been trained as scientists to use imagination to create with persistence when facing uncertainties. “Innovating with creativity is always important in forming solutions to overcome challenges,” he said. Professor Lee concluded by wishing all graduates a fruitful journey ahead.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the speech by the graduate representative, Mr. Chun Hong Chiang, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics. He shared his story of how he coped with the difficulties and challenging learning experiences during the pandemic. He thanked the university for providing him with all the support and opportunities, especially the innovative teaching methods. Also, a diverse and inclusive environment that allowed them to broaden their horizons and shape them to be capable of encountering future challenges.

He also appreciated the flexibility and variety of the program. They were able to select an alternative minor and choose electives freely. This enables him to select a computing minor. He said that this flexibility aligned with his interests and goals, which allowed him to pursue his passions and develop a unique skill set that would be useful for their future endeavors. Last but not least, he also expressed his gratitude to teachers, family members, fellow classmates, professors, and university staff for their support and encouragement along the university journey.

The ceremony also honoured the outstanding faculty members who had excelled in teaching and research by presenting the University’s Teaching Excellence Award, Outstanding Research Award and Outstanding Research Award for Junior Faculty; followed by the presentation of three College Awards to recognise teachers’ outstanding performance in teaching, research and knowledge transfer.

We wish all graduates a wonderful future. See you all again at upcoming events!
