On-line Colloquium: A "masing" Spin Ensemble: Maser for Quantum Information Technologies

ABSTRACT

Using an ensemble of nitrogen (P1) centers in diamond placed inside a microwave resonator, we realized population inversion of one satellite of the hyperfine-splitting electron spin resonance (ESR) transitions when a microwave pump tone is applied to the central transition.  This inversion is manifested by the amplification of a weak probe tone.  A mechanism for generating this inversion is proposed, involving higher-order spin cross interactions within the P1 centers [1] and spin flip-flops with other defect centers in the diamond sample.  We show that this "maser amplifier" is very interesting and promising for microwave quantum information and technology applications at millikelvin temperatures.

BIOGRAPHY

Yuimaru (Yui) Kubo completed his undergraduate study at the University of Tsukuba in March 2004. For his Ph.D. dissertation project, He worked on macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) experiments in high-Tc Josephson junctions, and observed MQT and phase diffusion in La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) intrinsic Josephson junction devices for the first time. Yui completed his Ph.D. dissertation in March 2009. Yui moved to France and joined Quantronics Group at CEA-Saclay as a postdoctoral scholar in June 2009.  At Saclay, he worked on hybrid quantum devices consisting of superconducting circuits and impurity spins in diamond and silicon. Since May 2021, he is an independent PI and forming a group, the Hybrid Quantum Device Team, in the Science and Technology Group at OIST.
