Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing was Vice-President (Student Affairs) from 2013 to 2020, and is currently Chair Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science and Founding Director of the Centre for Innovative Applications of Internet and Multimedia Technologies of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) . He graduated from University College London, the United Kingdom (UK), with Bachelor's Degree of Science (First-class Honours) and Doctor of Philosophy.
His research interests include multimedia, pattern recognition, virtual reality and e-Learning technologies. His research and innovations in these areas have won numerous regional and international awards, including a Gold Medal from the Salon International Des Inventions, Geneva; Prix Ars Electronica, Austria, etc. In 2007, Professor Ip was recognised as one of world’s distinguished innovators by TIME magazine.
Professor Ip is actively involved in the promotion of information technology in teaching and learning; quality education and professional certification for information technology professionals in Hong Kong. He was Vice-Chairman of the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence Steering Committee and served on the Steering Committee of the Quality Education Fund of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). He was awarded the "Medal of Honour" (MH) in 2014 by the HKSAR Government for his valuable contributions to the promotion of quality education.
Professor Ip is a Fellow of numerous professional societies, including UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. He has published over 300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He was a Founding Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Multimedia Retrieval, and served as Associate Editor for numerous international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.
