The Run Run Shaw library is delighted to share with you the achievements of CityU students from a service learning program, called "Let Them Shine 讓他們閃亮".
Through this service learning program, CityU students from various disciplines, including Linguistics & Translation (LT), Media & Communication (COM) and School of Creative Media (SCM) collaborated with the Cheers Band, which is a musical band formed by people with both visual impairment and intellectual disability. The band members are residents from the Morning Glory DAC cum Hostel which is operated by the Hong Kong Society for the Blind. In joint efforts, they composed 10 songs together and one of the songs 星夜 has been produced into a music video.
This service program is part of the Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections (LHRC) and has started since July 2019. The program has been supported by the Run Run Shaw Library and led by the Library Special Advisor, Steve Ching.
This program did not only engage the community sector by collaborating with the Hong Kong Society for the Blind, it also provided great opportunities where our students can share their talents with others. Through this program, our students learned by experience that despite being born with different capabilities, we can still make a contribution in music, arts, creativity and in every way we aspire to.
Very often, we like to label people by their different attributes, forgetting that we are the same in many ways, same in the way we are connected and inspired by music. We believe it is also a great opportunity for students to learn about the important value of social inclusion.
Let us appreciate this wonderful piece of work -- the music video of the song 星夜:

Inspired by this program, an article has been written and published in Hong Kong Literature Bimonthly:
景祥祜 (2020). 讓他們閃亮. 城市文藝 = Hong Kong Literature Bimonthly, 15(2), 45-47.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate LT, COM and SCM students and faculties on their great work! Well done!
Looking forward, the Library will continue our efforts in providing different learning opportunities and facilitating multi-disciplinary collaboration.
