A joint exhibition on sustainability on campus initiated by the Office of Provost was held at the Library from 5 to 18 April 2016. Projects and programmes on the theme of sustainability by a number of academic departments under the Campus Sustainability Fund were showcased. Students were invited to take a brief tour of the exhibition and then take part in an online quiz about the exhibition. Participants who got most answers correct received souvenirs. Over 230 students took part in the quiz. Demonstration sessions of the new 3D Scanning services at Library were also performed by Library staff during the exhibition period.
Participated departments and their projects:
The issue of sustainability in Planet, Natural Resources, and Civilization were addressed through road signs designed by Prof. Don Ritter of SCM, which aims to enhance an awareness of sustainability issues and to encourage people to avoid behaviors that are contrary to sustainability.
To raise awareness of engineering designs with sustainability to protect the Earth, the Apollon team came up with the idea to design a solar car which uses clean energy to reduce the possible air pollution for using fossil fuel.
3D printing has become a popular activity, but prototyping and waste are also created. This project aims to raise the awareness throughout the 3D printing community at CityU about the environmental impact of 3D printing and the potential of recycling and working from raw elements to reduce this impact.
A collaborative project involving a number of units and academic departments (Architecture and Civil Engineering, Physics and Materials Science, and Applied Social Sciences) at CityU, this project aims to help CityU understand the current condition of waste management within the campus and thus develop a comprehensive solid waste management program on campus for achieving sustainability, and to raise awareness in 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
Biodiversity is important in our ecosystem, for the sustainability of humanity. Through this project, it is aimed to raise the awareness of the CityU community on the significance of biodiversity and its contribution to environmental sustainability, and the significance of biodiversity and the challenges it faces. The mode of Citizen Science is adopted by involving individuals with different backgrounds or cultures in collaboration with scientists to work on nature conservation projects.
