Hu Shih (1891-1962) was one of the most influential figures in modern China. He played a key role in China’s New Culture Movement, establishing the vernacular (baihua) as the official written Chinese language. During World War II, Hu Shih even served as China’s ambassador to the United States between 1938 and 1942. While most of his public and private documents such as letters, diaries, manuscripts, and personal collections are preserved in the Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Hu Shih Memorial Hall at the Academia Sinica in Taipei, some of his personal collection of books and documents in the United States have not yet been systematically organized and archived.
Jointly organized by the Run Run Shaw Library and the Department of Linguistics and Translation, the exhibition <A Transpacific Voyage: A Collection of Hu Shih’s Books in the United States> provides an unprecedented access to a selection of books collected by Hu Shih between 1942 and 1958 in the United States. This small yet precious collection of Hu Shih provides a glimpse of his life, and will surely make contribution to the collation and further research of Hu Shih’s documents.
In tandem with the exhibition, a series of activities including curator tours and lectures were held to engage students, faculty and members of the CityU community.
