The Korean Publishers Association (KPA) generously donated to CityU a valuable collection of about 300 books in Korean or English, covering Korean art, culture, folklore, history, architecture, music, language, literature, religion, education and travel for Korean studies. These books will enable students to have a better understanding of Korea. A ceremony was held on 2 Dec, 2011 to acknowledge the donation. Officiating the ceremony were Mr. Lee Yeo Hong, Deputy Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, and Prof. Steve Ching, University Librarian of CityU. Other guests attending included Mr. Park Ik Soon, General Manager of KPA , Miss Kim Sin Young, Assistant Manager of KPA, Miss Kim Gyu Ri, Producer of Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, Dr. Sin King Kui, Acting Head of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL), and some instructors from CTL.
The Library has been pursuing our mission to promote multicultural education, to support East Asian Studies and to serve as a bridge to link different aspects of art and culture with the academic communities. This donation will certainly help strengthen the East Asian Collection.
After the ceremony, guests and colleagues examined the donated titles on display. Furthermore, taking the opportunity for cultural exchange, Mr. Lee and other guests were introduced to the origin of Chinese characters and traditional writing tools. They were also invited to have some practices in writing Chinese calligraphy.
