Veterinary employability is aligned to several domains including building effective relationships, having the ability to support the self and having good self-awareness. How do veterinarians find motivation and purpose in their work? How do we build our resilience and adaptability? Are we aware of our strengths and limitations? Can we build emotional competence?
Dr Brian McErlean will present a seminar on veterinary mental health focusing on attributes that increase our employability.
Dr Brian McErlean, MVB, MRCVS
Dr Brian Mc Erlean has spent several decades in veterinary practice in Western Australia since qualifying as a veterinarian. Witnessing the high prevalence of depression amongst his colleagues spurred him to take action towards improving mental health in the veterinary community. Brian took up the role of Community Coordinator for the Australian Veterinary Association (Western Australia) with Onelife, a state government funded initiative, designed to accumulate information on veterinary suicides and mentation, and provide education on the same. He was also on the committee of the VetSet2Go project, aimed to define the capabilities most important for employability and success in the veterinary profession, and create assessment tools and resources to build these capabilities.
Brian has visited Hong Kong twice and provided thought provoking seminars on veterinary mental health.
