The University, in pursuit of excellence in research and professional education, is committed to providing a safe learning and work environment to its faculty, staff, students and campus users. However, no matter how hard the University strives to mitigate the potential risks, critical incidents that disrupt university operations and campus safety may happen. Despite the usual unpredictability of critical incidents, the University believes sound policies and measures should be in place to anticipate and prepare for the unexpected. With such a large university population, we realise that emergencies occur, and it is imperative that prompt and appropriate action is taken to handle these incidents effectively.

The University embraces the following core principles in managing critical incidents:

  1. Campus safety is, and will always be, our top priority.
  2. Prevention and readiness to respond to critical incidents are equally, if not more, important as the cure.
  3. Commitment of qualified and sufficient resources is crucial to prevent and respond to critical incidents and minimise the associated impact.
  4. Effective and timely communication with stakeholders should be maintained in the event of a critical incident.
  5. Compliance with legal requirements, including those relating to confidentiality and personal data privacy, and observance of relevant codes of professional practice, must be ensured.
