New appointment
Professor Guo Yongxin was appointed Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering, effective from 16 May. Professor Guo's research interests include electromagnetics in medicine, antennas, wireless power transfer, and MMIC modelling and design. He is a Fellow in the IEEE and the Singapore Academy of Engineering.
HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Wang Enge, of Peking University, will conduct an HKIAS Distinguished Lecture, titled “Full quantum effects in condensed matter physics” on 6 June. In the talk, organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS), he will discuss nuclear quantum effects and non-adiabatic effects in practical materials, which cannot be overlooked when performing accurate simulations or measurements of their physical and chemical properties. Another HKIAS Distinguished Lecture will be delivered by Professor Ma Wei-ying, Huiyan Chair Professor of Tsinghua University, titled “Generative AI for scientific discovery”. In the talk on 11 June, Professor Ma will introduce generative AI technology aimed at scientific discovery and present the latest progress of his team in developing generative AI technology for applications in areas such as drug discovery, protein engineering and antibody design. HKICE Summit on Next-Generation Green Energy Materials and Applications
The HKICE Summit on Next-Generation Green Energy Materials and Applications, organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE), is dedicated to showcasing the latest advancements in novel nanomaterials development and their applications in clean energy devices. Held on 13 and 14 June, the summit will cover a series of plenary lectures from world-leading scholars and keynote talks from local experts in areas like emerging PVs, energy storage, green energy materials, catalysis and electrochem. The team of Electrical Engineering students, Onggowarsito Raymonk Surya, Chan Ka-shing, and Zhang Fanglu, won the second prize in the “Practice Competition - Computing Track 2” at the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024 Global Final. They were supervised by Dr Du Yuefeng, a Postdoc from the Department of Computer Science. Over 160 teams and more than 470 players from 49 countries and regions participated in the Global Final after several rounds of selection.
