Aims of Major

Aerospace has been undergoing rapid changes since the last century. Such changes have been driven by the advancement in electric aircraft flight technologies, advanced digital communications (what is now called digital aerospace), smart inspection, autonomous flight, supersonic flight technologies, etc. Our major takes cognizance of these changes but at the same time provides the students with the engineering skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the current climate and to adapt to the forthcoming challenges. The timing of this new proposal offers CityU the opportunity to nurture a new generation of aerospace graduates in Hong Kong, who are able to meet the many future challenges of the aerospace and engineering industries.

The proposed aerospace engineering major at CityU aims to provide students with a significantly broad base of engineering skills. They will meet the needs of the current and the changing aerospace industry, e.g. New Space (SpaceX), space flight and the next generation aircraft. Moreover, the multidisciplinary education also enhances graduate employment in areas such as technical services, consultancy, manufacturing and finance, which is aligned with the manpower need in Hong Kong.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to:

  1. Have an understanding of the scientific principles and applications of aerospace engineering.
  2. Gain basic knowledge in relevant areas, including fluid mechanics/flight mechanics/flight control, aeroelasticity/aerodynamics, propulsion/thermodynamics, structural/solid mechanics, material science, design/manufacturing, electrical and electronics systems, and communication systems.
  3. Gain laboratory experience with aerospace engineering projects.
  4. Develop necessary problem solving capability, design and experimental skills.
  5. Acquire the synergistic ability to formulate and solve real-world aerospace engineering problems.
  6. Acquire work related experience and effective communication skills.
