Course Aims

This course aims to develop students’ literary, cultural and aesthetic sensitivity to literary texts by exploring how culture and literature are translated by writers, scholars, and journalists over the twentieth century in the Anglophone and Sinophone worlds. Among the aims of this course is to examine how literary and cultural texts are received, translated, and interpreted in a translational and multilingual context and what does it mean to read and translate a literary tradition in another language. Through close readings of selected works, students will learn how nuances in meaning are expressed that lay the foundations for literary translation.
