Course Aims

This course aims to develop research students’ academic skills and research capacities through reading scholarly literature on a topic they choose. It builds the foundation for the students to broaden their knowledge in the areas of language, literature, history, religion, philosophy, arts, culture, and cultural heritage studies. Through a critical assessment of the literature in the students’ fields, the course provides solid methodological training for the students in textual analysis and criticism, data collection, as well as literature review and analysis. Regarding the readings, the students should summarize the main points, criticize the writing styles, and examine the arguments. In addition, the students will focus on their research on Chinese literature, history, philology, philosophy and so on. They are required to master both traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese characters as well as to be able to communicate in Putonghua when they enroll in the program. Either Cantonese or Putonghua will be used as the Medium of Instruction depending on the teaching needs.
