5-day Summer Exchange Programme with Zhejiang University

Our Department jointly organized a 5-day Summer Exchange Programme with the College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Science of Zhejiang University during 12-16 August 2024. Around 40 participants worked together for a week on the theme of “Biomedical imaging and technology” organized by Prof. Kannie W. Y. CHAN and faculty members from both universities.

An ingestible, battery-free, tissue-adhering robotic interface for non-invasive and chronic electrostimulation of the gut

Prof. YU Xinge collaborated with MIT and Zhejiang University to develop an ingestible, battery-free, and tissue-adhering robotic interface (IngRI) for non-invasive and chronic electrostimulation of the gut. The results of this study suggest that concepts inspired by soft and wireless skin-interfacing electronic devices could be applied to ingestible electronics with potential clinical applications for evaluating and treating gastrointestinal conditions.

Programmable Microfluidic-Assisted Highly Conductive Hydrogel Patches for Customizable Soft Electronics

Prof. KHOO Bee Luan and her team developed microfluidic-assisted hydrogel patches (MAHPs) endowed with anti-freeze, self-adhesive, exceptional water retention properties, and high stretchability. MAHPs presents with excellent conductivity at extreme temperatures, with potential for the development of sophisticated and tailored soft electronics.

Success in General Research Fund (GRF) / Early Career Scheme (ECS) Projects 2024-25

Ten projects have been awarded General Research Fund (GRF) / Early Career Scheme (ECS) for 2024-25, with a success rate of 47.6% which is the highest among sister departments in the College of Engineering. The funded amount is $12.7M, which is 19.15% of the College total. Among the ten awarded projects, four of them are listed as highly-ranked applications.

Wireless Magnetic Impact Needle Robot That Can Output a Large Force to Penetrate Tissues

Mr. XIANG Yuxuan (PhD candidate in Prof. ZHANG Jiachen's group) has led a team to develop a wireless magnetic impact needle robot (MINRob) based on a triple-magnet system. Utilizing reversible and repeatable magnetic collisions, this small-scale robot accomplishes a ten-fold increase in force output compared with existing magnetic miniature robots.

Led by Prof. Pakpong CHIRARATTANANON, the research team has developed a 35-gram hybrid robot called Hopcopter. The Hopcopter can jump, fly, and spin with incredible speed and precision. The robot consists of a typical mini-quadcopter with a passive telescopic leg.

Super permeable wearable electronics for stable, long-term biosignal monitoring

Prof. YU Xinge and his research team have developed super wearable electronics that are lightweight, stretchable and increase sweat permeability by 4,000-fold. The wearable electronics provide continuous and stable monitoring of vital signs without causing discomfort or signal disruption brought about by sweat and air permeability.
