Credit Transfer/ Course Exemption
Students may be granted Credit Transfer or Course Exemption under the following circumstances:
Credit Transfer
A "TR" grade is recorded in student’s academic record for the equivalent CityU course. Where an equivalent CityU course cannot be established, credit transfer may be granted towards the degree requirement.- For normative 4-year degree students, the credit units earned no earlier than at an appropriate level before the date of enrolment can be transferred.
- For both normative 4-year degree students and students admitted with advanced standing, the credit units earned outside throughout their studies at CityU (including but not limited to the exchange/ joint programmes can be transferred).
Course Exemption
- For both normative 4-year degree students and students admitted with advanced standing, they can apply for exemption from specific courses based on their prior studies.
Application Procedures
Students who wish to apply for credit transfer or course exemption based on previous qualifications attained prior to admission to the University, must make an application before the start of the first semester of admission. Current students who have completed studies at other institutions after admission to the University, must submit an application immediately in the semester following attainment of the additional qualification.

Separate applications should be made for courses or qualifications completed at different institutions.

Supporting Documents
- Official transcript (or certified true copies)
- Course information (course syllabuses or documents on course description, course level, number of contact hours, assessment, etc.)
- Other relevant information in support of your application (e.g. proof of the professional qualification)
- Original receipt of the required fees payment
Reminders
- Make sure that your studies elsewhere are equivalent in level and content to the specific CityU course(s). Consult your Major Leader/Academic Advisor if you are in doubt.
- Application for credit transfer/course exemption has to be considered by academic units concerned, the processing time varies. We will inform you of the result via email as soon as possible.
- Since students may be pre-registered with courses at the start of a semester/term, students are required to take the initiative to drop the course(s) for which credit transfer/course exemption has been approved.

- It is a minor requirement course
- Take any other minor-related course specified by the minor-offering academic unit
- It is a Gateway Education (GE) course
- Take any other GE course
Students are usually required to take any other courses to make up the credits required for graduation except:
- No. You don’t need to submit any application. Credit transfer/course exemption of GE1501 will be updated to your student record around the start of semester. Please note that if you have been granted an exemption from GE1501, you are required to take any other Gateway Education (GE) course to make up for the credit units.
