Date: 20 - 24 May 2019
Venue: Mini Theatre, Run Run Shaw Library
Using old documents and archives as sources for forensic investigative studies, along with new media’s approach to support research utilizing 2D animation, 3D modelling, 4K video recording, and Virtual Reality Photography, Run Run Shaw Library’s Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections (LHRC) is able to demonstrate to students how old media information is able to integrate with new media capabilities in bringing their study interests into visualization for assignments and/or Final Year Project(s). The speaker will not only indicate methods of retrieving archived documents, old newspapers, historical photographs and manuscripts for research, he will also provide examples of student projects which used new media practice for exhibiting and showcasing their work. This seminar will also look into cases of seeking copyrighted and licensed materials from institutions and, if necessary, access to authorized locations where fieldwork study is needed.
The speaker, Mr Daniel Lai is currently a Research Assistant at Run Run Shaw Library working with LHRC since September 2017. Mr Lai is a graduate of City University of Hong Kong’s Master of Arts in Communication and New Media programme where he worked in directing, writing, filming, and editing four LHRC documentaries during his studies, including one (The Preservation of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda) receiving Best Short Documentary (February 2018) at the London Independent Film Awards (London, UK) and Best Student Documentary (2018) at the Asia Independent Film Festival (Bangalore, India). In the seminar, Mr Lai will introduce new media methods for forensic investigate research.
