Elliot joined the staff of the LC in 2022, but he has been involved in language teaching and research for most of the 21st century. Before arriving at CityU, he spent two years as an instructor and graduate assistant at the University of Alabama (USA), a year and a half as a visiting professor at KAIST in Daejeon, South Korea, and a little more than a decade as an assistant professor at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. He has also taught courses at, among other places, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts, and Osaka Metropolitan University.
As an instructor, Elliot specializes in content-based instruction. He has designed and taught EFL classes with sustained content in subjects such as psychology, Western philosophy, American studies, and literature. He has also designed and administered numerous courses in English for Academic Purposes. As a researcher-practitioner, Elliot is highly interested in group dynamics, motivation, engagement, and language assessment. His most recent research work pertains to randomization methods for in-class activities and the impact of online and hybrid learning on group cohesion. He has co-authored or co-presented with numerous people over the years and is always on the lookout for interesting new research projects.
