This course is designed to introduce the students to contemporary economic issues in China. It will provide the students with the historical context in which to understand the economic development of the Chinese economy, bring to the students’ attention hotly debated policy issues such as exchange rate and interest rate liberalization, motivate them to ask meaningful questions and help them to design a scientific plan to answer their own research questions. Apart from an essay-style assignment and an in-class final exam, the students are expected to form groups to work on an issue of their own choice. The instructor will help the groups to ask well-defined questions, interview professionals from relevant fields, form hypotheses and direct them to potentially data-based evidence to test their hypotheses. The students’ research effort will culminate in a mini-conference where groups present their results to the audience.
