What is work? What is love? Is it possible to work without love or to love without work? In this course, we will examine these and other questions which psychologists, sociologists, and more recently, management scholars and practitioners in different cultures and societies have been seeking answers to for centuries. The instructional methods are varied: In-group and in-class discussion; group presentations; reflection exercises; case studies; analyses of cultural artifacts such as movies, paintings, and leisure activities. The learning goal of this course is to help students develop personal insights so that they can put into practice Steve Jobs’s advice, “You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.”
