CLASS Alumna Demonstrates the Artistry of Cantonese Opera at Chinese Cultural Festival

Chinese performing arts have a storied history, but new generations continue to rejuvenate the forgotten aspects of Chinese culture. CityU’s Department of Chinese and History (CAH) held its annual cultural festival themed “Performing Arts in the City: Inheritance and Innovation” from 26 March to 6 April 2024.

As Chinese culture is always rich in artistic heritage, this festival offered an extensive platform to immerse oneself in the enchanting world of shadow puppetry, Cantonese opera, Naamyam, and Kunqu. Not only did the event enhance students’ exposure to the modernity of Chinese arts, but it also fostered meaningful connections between generations.

The festival culminated with a series of riveting activities, including exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, and performances by both emerging and accomplished artists. Among the notable line-up is Ms LEUNG Fei-tung, an alumna of CAH and a talented Cantonese opera performer, who delivered a mesmerising lecture titled “Cantonese Opera Inheritance in Modern Society” on 2 April 2024.

During her talk, Ms Leung introduced the traditions, customs and jargon used within the context of Cantonese opera. With great passion, she shared her personal experiences and perspectives as a budding artist in the troupe. To the audience’s delight, she also showcased some basic movements of Cantonese opera, providing a glimpse into the artistry of this craft.

Reflecting on the lessons she learned from the industry, she expressed deep gratitude and respect for those who came before her. “A Cantonese opera performer is a vessel which carries the traditional crafts passed down by the veterans while also offering fresh insights and contributions for the generations to come,” she remarked.

The cultural festival was a genuine celebration of creativity, tradition, and cross-cultural exchange. While participants indulged in the delicacy of Chinese performing arts, there came the chance for one to contemplate the significance of cultural preservation and innovation in today’s society.
