Remarks: *Students not enrolled in BMS8002 Seminars on Biomedical Sciences 1 or BMS8003 Seminars on Biomedical Sciences 2 are required to take BMS8102 or BMS8103 as core courses instead. For students completed BMS8002 and/or BMS8003 as core course(s) before Semester B 2016/2017, they may take BMS8102 and/or BMS8103 as electives. **Electives will be offered subject to sufficient enrolment. Qualifying Examination (if any): The Department shall appoint a Qualifying Panel for each student upon his/her admission to the research degree programme. The Panel should consist of at least three faculty members, including the supervisor of the student who should be the Chair. The Panel’s responsibility will be to supervise the student’s study throughout his/her PhD candidature. The Panel should normally be required to prescribe coursework for students within one month from their commencement of studies. The panel will monitor the student’s study throughout his/her entire study period through assessing the qualifying report submitted by the student at regular intervals, assess the student’s progress and performance by conducting an interview, oral examination or presentation for the purposed of confirmation of candidature. |
Qualifying/Annual Report Submission: i. Qualifying Report (Form SGS35) Students are required to submit a qualifying report (in English) within the specified qualifying periods as follows: • Full-time students: within 6–12 months from commencement of study • Part-time students: within 9–18 months from commencement of study For students admitted to the PhD programme, the Qualifying Panel will conduct a qualifying examination consisting of a written proposal on the thesis project (which should include a survey of the relevant literature, an identification of a specific research topic, the research methodology and a discussion of the possible outcomes), an oral presentation by the student, and an oral examination by the Qualifying Panel. This qualifying examination should be scheduled at the end of the first year of study. ii. Annual Progress Report (Form SGS36) Students who have been permitted to continue their studies after the qualifying period are required to submit a progress report (in English) on an annual basis until they have submitted the final version of their theses for assessment. The Qualifying Panel will provide its written assessment and feedback to the students on the Annual Progress Report (via Form SGS36). |
Thesis:
A PhD thesis should present the results of research investigation, give evidence of a sound understanding of the area of study, its context and applicability, make a contribution to knowledge and make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject areas concerned. The PhD candidate should submit a thesis for examination by the end of their maximum study period or the stipulated study period. The thesis assessment should include a compulsory oral examination and any other assessment arrangements as required by the Panel of Examiners. |
